Abstract of thesis on a theme

"Mathematical simulation and physical modeling of convective fluid flow in six-strand billet CCM tundish"

Actuality of theme

Main strategy for continues casting on the billet casters with open jet is minimization of operation costs during casting process. It is reached by use of multilane CCM (4-6 strands and more). These casters are provided with sequences of 70-100 ladles from one tundish. In this case life time of refractory lines of tundish and tundish box are very important for long casting process. It is well know that essential erosion reduction can be reached with optimal design of a tundish box and the certain scheme of fluid flows in a tundish.

Scientific novelty and practical value of job performances

Emphasis of the present research was placed on the improvement of the specific tundish characteristics in respect to both cost and quality. Set optimization tasks are performed by combining cold hydrodynamic model experiments provided theory of similarity considered and three-dimensional mathematic simulation techniques. To demonstrate the present approach, careful analysis was carried comprising two steps. In the first step flow dynamics phenomena in the physical model were investigated to check efficiency of transverse dams and damping devices located in zone impact jet, which is down from the ladle. The model of tundish (scale 1:3) made of transparent acrylic resin. Water, oil and saw dust of different density were used as model liquids, the dynamics of the solid non-metallic inclusions motion were video recorded from the top of the vessel. It was determined that good positive effect for braking energy of jet had been achieved with special design of tundish box. It must be cylindrical vessel with open windows which are directed on remote tundish walls. Next step for development of design of a tundish box and optimization fluid flows in tundish was made on the base of mathematical modeling.

Goals and objectives of the work

This modeling investigation gave possibility to make original design for tundish box which has using for six-strand billet CCM of Enakievsky Iron and Steel Works (Ukraine). Record sequences of a casting from one tundish is 70 hours.
