Abstract
The Kievskiy district of Donetsk
History and general information
The Kievskiy district of Donetsk embraces an area of 33 square kilometers and its population practically equals 150 000 people. This is the most populated and the most densely populated district of the city.
The Kievskiy district was founded later than the other 6 initial districts, that is, in 1967. The district is situated in the north of the city and it is one of the best in respect of manufacturing, trade and cultural development [7].
It is called the main gate of Donetsk as it has the international airport, which receives planes of all classes, and the railway station. Not far from the airport there is Putilovskiy bus station that services long-distance passenger buses [1].
District transport
Being one of the central districts, the Kievskiy district of Donetsk is fully provided with transport. Transportation is carried out with tram №1 and trolley-buses №2 (along the 1st line), 5, 9, 10, 17, 18, and also public buses №2, 73 and numerous regular minibuses [2]. The main motorways run along the central streets of Donetsk – Artyom street and Universitetskaya street. The terminal stations for most of the routes are the railway station and the airport of Donetsk, which are also in the Kievskiy district of the city [3].
Cultural centre of Donetsk
Besides, the Kievskiy district is the cultural centre of Donetsk. It has the exposition centre ExpoDonbass, the youth palace Younost and the Donetsk local history museum. On the territory of one of the biggest recreational parks, the Lenin Komsomol park, there is the new stadium of "Shakhtar Donetsk" – Donbass Arena. Right opposite the new stadium there is the regional sport complex Olympiyskiy which, apart from the football stadium, comprises track and field events section, tennis courts and the swimming pool Locomotiv [4].
In the Kievskiy district of Donetsk there’s the building of the former Donetsk planetarium that has recently moved to the Voroshilovskiy district. Inside the trade and entertainment center Donetsk City there’s the most modern and the biggest cinema in Donetsk-Multiplex [5].
On the territory of the Kievskiy district a lot of big sport complexes (e.g. sport club Spotrmax) and gyms have been built. On the territory of the settlement Oktyabrskiy there’s a big sport complex Dolphin which has a state-of-the-art swimming pool where the water is cleaned with the help of ionization technology, whereas the other swimming pools are cleaned with chlorination.
On the territory of the Kievskiy district there are the Donetsk museum of local history, international exposition centre ExpoDonbass, and also one of the biggest concert halls in the city – the youth palace Yunost.
The Kievskiy district of Donetsk has several hotels, the biggest of which is the Shaktyor hotel which is being reconstructed at the moment for the forth-coming Euro championship. It is situated opposite Donbass Arena, the home stadium of "Shakhtar Donetsk", where one of the semi-finals of the Euro 2012 is going to take place [6].
Industry
The industrial potential is based on multisectoral industry with the prevalence of heavy industry: coal-mining, machine-building and metallurgical.
One of the most significant enterprises is Zasyadko Coal Mine headed by the Hero of Ukraine, People’s Deputy E.L.Zvyagilskiy. The mine annually produces more than 3.5 million tons of coal and about 2.3 million tons of coal concentrate.
Metallurgical industry is presented by Joint Stock Company "Donetsk metal rolling plant" – one of the most stable enterprises of Ukraine. The biggest of machine-building enterprises is Public Corporation "Tochmash" producing equipment for petroleum, gas and coal-mining industries, steel and cast-iron founding, molds and dies, various agricultural instruments.
Besides, on the territory of the Kievskiy district there are 30 big and medium industrial enterprises, including Public Corporation"Donetsk plant of mine-rescue equipment","Donetsk pilot plant of precision instruments","Remkommunelektrotrans" plant.
Building organizations are presented by Public Corporation"Donestkzhilstroy" building and manufacturing company", Co Ltd"Gorodskoye stroitelstvo (City Consrtuction)","Montazhnik","Suchasnyk","DLK-S", specialized bureau"Ukrenergochermet", Private Enterprise"Donbass manufacturing and trade centre KVK", etc.
The enterprises of the district produce about 100 items of consumer goods: household appliances, dishware, kitchen utensils, electrical appliances, children’s bicycles, toys, etc. More than 2300 small businesses, 9 banking establishments and a stock-market function here.
The leading medical institutions are found in the district: Donetsk State Regional Maternity and Childhood centre,"Sitko" hospital, Close Corporation "Association"Temp", Donetsk Scientific Research Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics DonGMU named after M.Gorkiy, and Regional Clinical Traumatological hospital [7].
Scientific and technical potential
The Kievskiy district is a big scientific centre. The scientific and technical potential is presented by 13 research and design institutions and bureaus, making scientific development in the sphere of coal-mining industry ("Dongipromuglemash"), mine-rescue ("Respirator"), mine survey (UkrNIMI) and oil and gas industry (Public Corporation "Design and Technology Institute "Gazoapparat"). It also includes institutions of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine: institutes of economics, industry and legal research, "PromstroiNIIproject" and "YouzhNIIgipromgaz", which are among 7 biggest science and research institutes of Ukraine and have certificates B401 of the international quality system on the base of standard requirements ISO 9000.
The higher school is presented by 9 higher educational institutions, among which are the Institute of Home Affairs of the Ministry of Home Affairs of Ukraine, the Institute of Railway Transport, the State Institute of Health, Physical Education and Sport, Ukrainian-Finnish Institute of Management and Business, the Institute of Economics and Economic Law, the Institutes of Management and Tourist Business. In the district there are 4 technical secondary schools, 2 higher professional and technical schools, two lyceums, 20 general secondary schools, 28 preschool institutions and 8 clubs for children and teen-agers [6].
