1929 - The Bennie Railplane
While railroad engineering stagnated between the world wars, one unique demonstration line was built by Scottish engineer George Bennie. The short test track was built over a railroad line near Glasgow, Scotland. Two electrically-powered propellers delivered 240 horsepower in a short burst for acceleration to the burst speed of 160 kph. There were plans for a high-speed link between London and Paris, with a seaplane to carry passengers across the English Channel, but the grave economic difficulties of the 1930's doomed the Railplane from the start.
The DLZ110F-type mine diesel-powered monorail locomotive is a traction unit designed for the transport of trains along a monorail I 155-profile suspension line in a horizontal plane and slants up to 25 degrees.
The locomotive may be used in environments involving hazards of methane and coal dust explosion. According to the Government Order No. GO 23/2003 (Directive of the European Parliament and Council EU 94/9/EC) the equipment is ranked within the group I., category M2. The locomotive meets all requirements of GO 24/2003 (Directive of European Parliament and Council EU 98/37/EC).
The basic parts of the locomotive are two cabins, the engine part with two driving units and up to three additional driving units. The engine part comprises a diesel engine and hydraulic driving device. The engine has four cycles and four cylinders. It is adjusts to mining conditions with protection of the suction and the exhaust tracts by a device that prevents the explosion of methane and its transfer into the unprotected atmosphere. Exhaust gases are cooled by water in a special exhaust box so that their outlet temperature does not exceed 70°C. The engine is started by a hydraulic starting device. The operating mode of the locomotive, speed, driven motohours, pressure and temperature values of the diesel-hydraulic aggregate are controlled by an electronic control and safety system. If the predetermined values are exceeded, the engine switches off and the locomotive is braked or stopped. The driving unit forms the final traction element, providing transfer of torsion moment onto driving pulleys with a polyurethane friction layer and onto railways on witch the lokomotive moves. The driving unit comprises two low-speed hydroengines and a retarding stationary braking system with the function of an emergency brake. If the preset speed is exceeded, this breaking system initiates automatically and brakes the locomotive to a stop.

Locomotive with five driving units can be used on railway lines with an approved traction force of 100 kN and for railway lines with approved traction force 80 kN. The carriage unit must be embedded between the third and second or the fourth and first driving units and maximum distance between cross anchoring of the line and the angle cannot exceed the distance between the driving units. (In this arrangement, the approved traction force of the line will not exceed 80 kN)
